The River Gym- Powered by Humans, Purifies, Energize, Transports
The River Gym concept won the third place in New York Magazine's 2005 Create a Gym competition, but accolades aside; the idea is a wonderful notion that should see the light of day. This human powered gym aims at transforming wasted human mechanical energy into a useful kinetic gymnasium. 'The multiple benefits of increased transportation, water purification, caloric energy expenditure, and superior changing views is invigorating.' And we agree. Architect Mitchell Joachim and personal trainer Douglas Joachim have designed the project. The idea is to have a floating gym that drifts along the Hudson and East rivers. While members workout amidst panoramic views, their energy expelled is converted to something useful. Each gym is programmed with a specific path set on a 15-minute loop moving from one point to the next. Thus each float serves as a gym, a transport vehicle and a hub for the green movement. The concept has been specifically designed for New York.
