The Laundry POD Greener Gadgets entry is an example of the kind of observant industrial design we need more of, from ID firm RKS:

While re-engineering and re-designing a salad spinner, we learned resourceful women were buying salad spinners to wash their delicates. This sparked the idea that the salad spinner technology we innovated could be used to create a portable, hand-powered laundry machine that would be far more appropriate for the task, than a salad spinner.

Another of RKS' projects worth checking out is the Mimique,

one of the first designs in response to the Google Android fully configurable phone concept.

Though created in concept only and not under contract to Google, the viral response on the internet led to calls from carriers and manufacturers worldwide to build and sell the new celebrity.
