Luckily, designer Juan Carlos Garzon created one such Nokia concept, with a touchscreen interface and a transparent display.

The lower side of the handset includes the battery, most of the hardware, incorporates the on/off button (front side) and a 5 megapixel camera (at the back). This Nokia concept’s display also emits light, allowing for better usage during night time.

A stunning design and a great idea!

Conceived by Dutch designer Menno Kroezen, the ‘Swap’ by Stefan Dzisiewski Smith is an intuitive device that lets you use the mobile phone in a more natural, ‘touching’ manner than ever. The cellphone exchanges information with a simple swap, so the users could interact with the gadget through gestures as we do in our day-to-day life. Designed for 3 Mobile, the touchphone allows the user answer a call as a spontaneously response by squeezing the sides of the phone. While the conductive sides exchange your information as soon as you puts in new contacts in the phone memory.

Paying homage to the HP 25 calculator, MS DOS and the good old numeric keypad, Australian designer Shane Crozier has come up with a retro mobile handset that literally relives the communication tools of the Stone Age, if not beyond. Entitled unusually ‘1337 (Leet)’ like its design, the square cellphone removes almost all modern features of the contemporary handsets and just includes Navigation controls and a Pong game interface. In addition, the 1337 phone is capable of standard texting as well as binary texting. The retro cellphone also has the option of two built-in ringtones, the Generic 80’s computer game music, and the sci-fi Theremin theme. While we are using the services of the 4G on our mobile phones, the 1337 (Leet) Phone other than its slim and compact size hasn’t anything to share with its contemporaries.

This phone/laptop packs a small front touch display, plus a larger screen on the inside of the handset. The latter can be pulled out and become an even larger display, turning the device into some sort of mini laptop.

A virtual QWERTY keyboard will be displayed and I’m pretty sure that the web browsing experience will be neat. Saying that the larger display is a flexible screen is a lucky guess, but it seems very likely, considering the current design trends.

Also, keep in mind that the Mobile Script concept device uses a nano material, covering it and turning solar energy into ‘juice’ that powers the phone.

Now, it appears again, dubbed Nokia Facet and this seems to be the work of Knot Design, a cellphone project that provides users with a brand new touch experience.

Nokia Facet uses ‘facets’ that hide a tactile keypad beneath the surface and also give the handset a gem-like look, thanks to the many angles of the geometric surface. Multimedia connectivity is also supported on the Nokia concept and if we were to look for flaws, the device seems a bit too square-ish and short for our taste.

E’llipse Traveler is a Smart Watch, Uses Widgets

Note: There is a rating embedded within this post, please visit this post to rate it.We’ve all heard about smartphones, but it’s very rare that we come across a ‘smart watch’, like the E’llipse Traveler concept pictured below. Designed by Su Chew Lee and Paolo di Prodi, this device comes with a fancy processor and the latest algorithms available on portable gadgets, used for learning the user’s habits and lifestyle.

This concept watch incorporates ZigBee and Bluetooth modules, that support indoor localization, even better than any GPS out there. E’llipse’s interface is based on widgets (weather, time, calendar) and we’re wondering if it also comes with phone features, that would make it even more appealing.

Also, the device is accompanied by a custom API, allowing developers to create apps for it.

Note: There is a rating embedded within this post, please visit this post to rate it.Reporting about the Fujitsu concept phones showcased at CEATEC 2009 hasn’t quite been a ball, specially since most of them were available online as mere pictures, so it’s up to us to speculate on their features and design. The list goes on, with the seventh concept, pictured below, a full touchscreen display handset.

The phone seems pretty normal, a touchscreen device with a pretty big screen, an on-screen numeric keypad and two strange segments on the upper and lower side. These two really made me curious and wonder what the deal with them was… Are they hinges of an unusual flip phone? Tiny camera sensors maybe? Projectors?

The Nokia CORE cellphone is a concept inspired by the futurism graphics of Star Wars. Designed around its interface, which resembles a solar system where all functions revolve around the core, the shape of the phone is derived from the interface core and is expanded around it. Developed under the ease of usage concept, thus it is made with a soft touch filled concavity on each side so it can be easily grabbed and used. For the unique functionality the phone when put facing down on a surface, automatically transfers the interface and content to the screen of the nearest computer via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Having done this, the phone then acts as a mouse-like device to control its own interface on the computer screen.

With the growing popularity of mobile phones among the masses, watches or clocks are having a tough time, if not breathing their last. For the cellphone has emerged as a functional device that not only tells time but also works as an alarm clock to wake you up in the morning. Enhancing the time and alarm functions of the mobile phone, Swedish designer Carl Hagerling has come up with an innovative phone that features a tilted display, in the alarm position, to give a better view of the time even while lying on the bed. The WakeUpPhone, as the designer calls his phone, generates power from two AAA batteries and comes integrated with a Walkman, camera and the power button. So, there is no point in spending extra on an alarm clock, PMP and camera, if you have the WakeUpPhone at your disposal.

Well, aside from the original image of the device, we’ve now got a bunch of new shots, courtesy of its maker, Shane A. Bygrave. We remind you that this is Cyber-shot concept phone, with a 12.1 megapixel camera.

Also dubbed the Impersa HD, the device packs a 4.1 inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with multi-touch support. The screen is protected against scratches, it supports portrait and landscape mode and you should know that the phone’s camera uses a Carl Zeiss lens, with autofocus, 3x optical zoom, XenonFlash, camera notification, self timer and night light.

A 3.5mm audio jack and a microSD card slot are also on the specs list of this concept. In the last image below, you can have a look at Impersa HD’s interface, looking pretty hot actually, specially if you take into account that this is a cameraphone.

Today at the Maemo Summit -- which we like to imagine happens in a lavish, remote mountain fortress somewhere in Finland -- Nokia dropped some interesting hints about what we can expect from Maemo 6. Look for both portrait and landscape support, multitouch, capacitive touchscreens, an 'iconic user experience and integrated internet services in one aesthetic package' (as opposed to a user experience that lacks icons, integrated internet services, or aesthetics, we suppose), and a desktop significantly larger than the display, which can be navigated either vertically or horizontally: Nokia is calling this 'the canvas principle,' although we'd call it 'possibly quite confusing' unless the design is particularly well implemented. Fujitsu Concept Phones Part 2: Judge-Dredd-Like Curvy Handset

Note: There is a rating embedded within this post, please visit this post to rate it.CEATEC 2009 hosted a wide variety of concept phones, specially those cool Fujitsu models, like the elegant pebble glass handset we’ve mentioned before. Now, we’ve stumbled upon a Fujitsu phone that seems taken from Judge Dredd and our guess is that it’s in fact a bracelet phone.

We can spot a camera incorporated in the device, plus a directional pad (probably for gaming purposes), a numeric keypad, two curvy displays (probably touchscreen) and a couple of other buttons. The Fujitsu concept phone looks like a pretty neat gaming device, with cool media features and a very high tech bracelet if it’s able to get attached to the user’s hand.

If I were to compare this to another object, it would surely be that Cryptex from the Da Vinci Code, but this would be half of that puzzle gadget.

Multimedia Pen is All but a Phone… Comes With Great Features

Note: There is a rating embedded within this post, please visit this post to rate it.A multitasking pen doesn’t sound like much, if you come to think about it, but Peter Vardal’s concept is cool enough to be discussed here. Specially because the Hungarian designer’s pen supports Wlan connectivity, so a microphone and Bluetooth headset connected to it would make an excellent Skype device.

The device is divided into multiple parts, among which there’s the standard central unit, the end part and the front part, that can get a ballpoint pen attachment. It can also get a mechanical pencil or a digital pen, while the central part incorporates a music player, charger input, LED light, plus a memory card and battery.

At the end of the multitasking pen you’ll notice the transmitter of the Bluetooth headset, which brings the device closer to a handset. You can also expand the functionality of the concept, by integrating a camera, a microphone, an USB connector, a WLAN receiver, a laser pointer and more. There’s also a dock bundled with the pen, sending data to and from it via a computer.

We have previously shown you quite a bunch of handsets for the visually impaired, either based on Braille keypads, voice recognition and voice command or even air chambers that change the shape of the phone’s keys. This time we’re having a look at the Tactility concept phone, designed by Siwei Liu.

This is a phone for visually impaired users and it’s based on a Braille keypad, using only the most basic feature of a  handset: calling and getting calls. This special device attaches a circular ring at the bottom, in order to be worn around the user’s neck, for a quicker accessibility.

Nice to see that in the modern world of top tech, designers still handle such issues and help all of use evolve, impaired or not.

Note: There is a rating embedded within this post, please visit this post to rate it.South Korean designer Ungnoh Yoon created an interesting cellphone concept, dubbed Matrix Phone 02, that gets pictured below. The device is inspired by science fiction movies and combines traditional design with modern technology.

If you close the handset, it resembles a good old beeper or other mobile device, however, once the upper side slides you’ll notice the Graphen display. The screen uses next generation technology and transforms the old-school-looking concept phone into a modern device.

Matrix Phone 02 measures 140mm x 50mm x 15mm, but its length can reach 90mm if it’s closed. Once it shrinks, the handset only uses a green OLED for basic features, like showing the time, caller ID and providing a quick dial features. That Graphen display is pretty cool, but somehow, I think that the green screen is cooler… maybe because I’m old-fashioned.
